What Is Piedra?
Battle of Piedra, a battle between the Byzantine Empire of East Rome and Iran. In 549, 8,000 troops of the Byzantine Empire surrounded the fortress of Piedra (1,500 in Iran) guarded by Iranian soldiers. The imperial army attacked several times and demolished most of the outer walls of Piedra, but did not occupy them in time. Iran received reinforcements in a timely manner, increased its strength to 3,000, and quickly repaired the city walls. The Imperial Army organized a second siege. The fighting was fierce. The Iranian garrison killed or injured nearly 2,000 and captured 700 people. Only 500 people withdrew from the fortress and held it. They were burned to death by the Byzantine army and the fortress fell. [1]
