What is a chain pump?
The chain pump is a type of water pump that has been used for centuries, but at a modern age it has fallen out of kindness. The pump consists of a pipeline associated with water supply, a circular chain and flat plates that have the same size and shape as a tube. These plates are connected to a string, which is then stretched through the tube. The water is captured on the plate and brought to the surface. The string is circular, so as the plates rise on one side of the string, fall back into the water on the other side.
The use of a chain pump was first recorded in ancient Egypt and Babylon. These early pumps were almost identical to those used thousands of years later. The original chain pumps would use animal or human force to turn the chain, often through a secondary system such as a push wheel. When the wheel turned, the associated handle would be activated, causing the chain movement. These early wheel systems rarely provided any mechanical advantage but to createLY processes easier for workers.
The first main innovation in the system came around the beginning of the second millennium when Islamic scholars added a flywheel to the system. This increment smoked the movement of the chain and provided a small mechanical advantage for the system. The mechanical advantage allows the system to release more energy than it takes, which means that less work went to raise the same amount of water.
hundreds of years later the pump was motorized. This style of the chain pump was very unusual because instead of other pump styles. This was the most common in places with small infrastructure or inside the ships. In both cases, its popularity was caused by the relative simplicity of the system combined with its low energy consumption.
While most chain pumps used the method of pipes and plates, there have been a handful of variations. The most common change of wjako bucket system. ChainThe Zy in these pumps contained buckets instead of standard plates. The water would appear and the worker would manually empty the bucket. This style of the chain pump usually did not have a pipe, just an open well.
In China, a wide square palette was used as a plate. These systems would cause a huge amount of water that would generally flow into the irrigation ditches. The Chinese also used a modified chain pump to fill the tank high on the cliff sides. These pumps worked similarly to a bucket pump, but in general it would be pulled from an active water source such as a lake or a river rather than an underground source.
