What is incense?

Incense is a rubber resin, which is extracted from trees belonging to the genus Boswellia. It is known that there are about 25 species of Boswellia trees, each producing an aromatic resin soluble in water with its own unique healing properties and scents. The incense resin begins like a milk white liquid that sticks to the touch that the tree produces to heal its suitcase when it is injured in some way. According to some archaeologists, this resin has been used and traded in the Middle East for at least 5,000 years. Suddenly it was a commodity that was as valuable as gold.

boswellia trees do not start to produce incense until they are eight to ten years old. The best credible resin is best only a few times a year, from about August to October and then from January to March. During this period, the harvest process is repeated. Trees can relax between periods of harvest, because it helps them produce better resin quality.

Using a special tool called Mengaff, the cut is made to a 5 -inch (12.7 cm) part of the Boswellia tree. The tree produces a thin, milk similar to juice or resin, which, as soon as it is exposed, begins to harden. About 14 days later, the combine returns to scratch and collect hard incense, called tears, from a tree. After approximately 12 weeks of aging, the collected resins are hand -sorted, graded and transported to international markets. It is necessary to manually and include incense resin, because the differences in climate and soil affect trees and cause changes in the color, properties and quality of resin.
