Polyethylene glycol laurate

Polyethylene glycol laurate is an important nonionic surfactant with good water solubility, emulsification and thermal stability. It can be used as the main component of chemical fiber, especially polyester staple fiber oil agent. It can not only give the fiber good smoothness and antistatic property, but also improve the fiber feel. It is widely used. The preparation of polyethylene glycol laurate (including monoester and diester) is usually prepared by reacting lauric acid with ethylene oxide or esterifying with polyethylene glycol (hereinafter referred to as PEG). [1]

Preparation method of polyethylene glycol laurate

There are two commonly used synthesis methods: one is the use of basic catalysts, ethoxylation reaction with ethylene oxide and lauric acid, the reaction formula is:
RCOOH + nC 2 H 4 O RCOO (C 2 H 4 O) n H
The polyethylene glycol laurate [RCOO (CH 2 CH 2 O) n OCR] prepared by this method has a difficult to control the degree of polymerization n, and the products synthesized by this method are mainly monoesters. Ethane is a flammable and explosive substance, so production management requirements are strict. [2]
The other is to use an acidic catalyst to perform an esterification reaction with polyethylene glycol and lauric acid. The reaction formula is:
RCOOH + nHO (C 2 H 4 O) n OH RCOO (C 2 H 4 O) n H + H 2 O
2RCOOH + nHO (C 2 H 4 O) n OH RCOO (C 2 H 4 O) n OOCR + 2H 2 O
This method is carried out under acid catalysis, which not only has a low reaction temperature and a short reaction time, but due to the degradation of the side reaction PGE during the esterification process, the molecular weight of the product decreases, the viscosity decreases, and the performance is unstable. In order to overcome this defect, phenolic antioxidants can be added, which can inhibit the occurrence of side reactions during the esterification reaction and ensure the stability of product performance. Since the esterification reaction is a reversible reaction, a method of reducing pressure for esterification is used to remove water generated by the reaction in a timely manner to move the reaction in the direction of forming an ester.
