What are paraphollicular cells?

paraphollicular cells are small biological structures that are located in the thyroid gland and are responsible for the release of the hormone called calcitonin. They are classified as endocrine cells because the thyroid gland is an endocrine gland. In addition, paraphollicular cells are sometimes referred to as C cells C.

The term "parafollicular" is derived from the exact location and condition of the cells. These cell types are found outside the cavities similar to thyroid pouch or follicles in connective tissue. Doctors believe that excessive production of calcitonin causes diarrhea, which is the primary symptom of thyroid medular cancer. Treatment usually includes surgery and success generally depends on how soon cancer is diagnosed.
