What Is a Steckel Mill?

Furnace rolling mill, also known as steckel-mill, is a steel plate rolling mill. Its production line usually consists of a heating furnace, a reversible main rolling mill, a steel plate collection system including a coiler, and other auxiliary equipment. Furnace coil mills are equipped with an in-furnace coiler before and after the main rolling mill. During the rolling process of thin gauge coils, the steel sheet can be coiled in the furnace to keep the temperature of the steel sheet in order to reduce the temperature drop of the steel sheet during rolling.

Because the furnace coil mill uses a series of hot continuous rolling
After liquid core rolling and soft reduction, slabs with a length of 1905mm and a weight of 93t can be cut. The heating furnace is a walking / rotary hearth furnace. The rolling mill is driven by two sets of motors with a total power of 18800KW, and the maximum rolling speed is 11.2m / s. Due to the continuous production process, its quality, productivity and yield are better than those of conventional plate mills, and it has strong competitiveness. Recently, the plant plans to put into operation a single-stand furnace coil mill production line with an annual output of 1.36 million tons and a roll width of 3556mm in 2000, which will specialize in the production of medium-thick plates with a thickness of 5-50mm and a maximum width of 3250mm. In addition, some of the original plate mills, such as the Portland plant in the United States, the Haymill plant in Canada, and the LPN company in Thailand, transformed the original plate mill into a furnace coil mill, and adopted a continuous production method to expand The production range of medium and thick plates can also produce thin coils.
Although the above-mentioned furnace coil rolling mill is equipped with devices such as automatic thickness control and flat shape control, the rolling speed, coil weight, transmission power of the main rolling mill, coil thickness of the furnace, high-pressure water pressure for descaling, and control of the final rolling temperature are adopted. Measures, however, are limited to the inherent characteristics of the furnace coil mill. Compared with the production of thin strip coils by hot continuous rolling mills (including thin slab continuous casting and rolling), there are still two main disadvantages: First, the surface quality of the strip is slightly worse. This is caused by the difficulty of single-stand multi-pass rolling and secondary scale removal in the coil. Although the hot-rolling mill has taken effective measures such as in-line grinding and strengthening descaling to improve the surface quality, the surface quality of the strip is still inferior to that of the hot-rolling mill products; the second is the longitudinal (especially head and tail) and transverse temperature of the strip. Uneven, and the effect of remedial measures is limited. Therefore, the types and specifications of carbon steel thin strip coils produced by the furnace coil mill are limited.
In addition, the cost of producing thin strips with a furnace coil mill is slightly higher than that with a hot continuous rolling method, which also hinders the application of the furnace coil mill in the production of hot rolled strip. The above disadvantages will not be a problem for the production of carbon steel plate. Because the longitudinal and transverse temperature difference of the medium and heavy plate is greatly reduced due to the thickening of the steel plate, and the rolling time is short, the scale is greatly reduced [2]
The furnace and rolling mills for rolling carbon steel and low-alloy steel constructed (or remodeled) in the 1990s all produce medium-thick plates and thin-plate coils. In addition, in terms of continuous casting slab supply, a continuous process production line using medium-thick continuous casting slabs and furnace coil mills is a new combination mode. But under the condition of reduced rolling compression ratio and no horizontal rolling, whether the quality of high-strength low-alloy steel, pipeline steel and ship plate can be guaranteed remains to be tested in actual production. According to the Montelière plant, due to the guarantee of high-quality smelting conditions, its product quality can be guaranteed.
In short, the new trends mentioned above should be taken seriously. Under modern and high-quality smelting conditions, the combined mode of medium-thickness continuous casting slabs and modern furnace-rolling mills has a strong comprehensive competitiveness and a continuous plate production line that may be the development of plate production A new model and direction. However, it should be noted that the comprehensive competitiveness of furnace coil mills, which are mainly used to produce thinner strips of carbon steel, is limited, and this point should be paid special attention to [3] .
