What is intersex surgery?

Interex surgery is a category performed in individuals who have had irregular sexual development and required reconstruction surgery to restore or improve the appearance and function of their genitalia. Disorders of sexual development (DSD) may occur as congenital disorders or defects or from premature injury to the genital organs. There are many conditions that may require intersex surgery and include chromosomal, gonadal and phenotype disorders of sex. The surgeon generally performs this type of surgery to make the patient look and function more like a typical woman or more as a typical male. This may consist of relatively direct surgery such as cosmetic reconstruction of the vagina. Surgery can also be much more complicated, such as the gender assignment of an individual whose sex is ambiguous. If the DSD is identified at birth, the surgeon usually performs surgery is 24 months old. Surgery is often complemented by hormonal therapy.

Interex surgery is done from mfoot of reasons. Physically, patients can help patients more normally in terms of continence, sexuality and fertility. It can also help the patient socially because they place it more tightly in one or the other sex and reduce abnormalities that can cause social embarrassment or dysfunction. It is believed that surgery subsequently helps both patients and their families in psychological point of view by allowing them to better adapt to cultural standards.

But this is also what makes intersex surgery controversial. There are many ethical questions and its future consequences for individuals. Normally, the patient is treated not only by the surgeon, but also by a team of specialists who can include advisors, genetics and endocrinologists. This is especially true for patients who have gender assignments or assignment surgery.

ethical issues of conducting surgery in an infant that cannot decide on afterThe heads and future physical and psychological consequences have triggered many debates about the procedure, especially because some patients feel later in their lives that their operations are inappropriate. Although it is often performed when the patient is infant, surgery may be performed when the patient is old enough to make informed decisions on his own sex. This debate is particularly important for patients for whom surgery is not medically necessary, but rather social or cultural choice.
