What is a papayan tree?
The papaya tree is a tree bearing fruit found in tropical and subtropical climatic zones. While originally from Mexico, this tree is now being grown throughout Florida, Hawaii and Central America. It can reach heights of up to 33 feet (10 m) and has a tall, only stem. The papaya tree produces large, sweet fruit that is consumed around the world, and is also used in cosmetics and folk remedies. These fruit are traditionally called papayas or paws, but can also be referred to any number of local and regional names depending on the ground. Papaya trees can be male, women or hermaphroditic, which means they contain both male and female components. Only women and hermaphroditic trees can produce fruit. Hermaphroditic varieties are capable of self -polluting, while male or female trees must be pollinated through birds, butterflies or other insects. Male and female species must be planted in relatively close proximity to ensure proper pollination.
Papaya trees thrive in warm climatic zones and prefer a temperature range of 70 to 90 degrees F (21 to 32 degrees C). They cannot tolerate frost temperatures, but can also be damaged by temperatures exceeding the preferred range. The papaya tree is highly sensitive to wind damage, especially if it is loaded with heavy fruit. It requires frequent irrigation as well as adequate drainage and full UN exposure. These trees should be planted 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 m) apart to ensure that they have enough space for spreading.
Papáya tree consists of a high single stem, with very large leaves that grow in a spiral pattern around the stem. In general, they require about three years to achieve maturity and begin to produce fruit. These fruits grow large protective leaves of the tree in clumps.
papayas or plawpows can grow to a length of about 14 inches (35 cm) and have a bell -shaped profileu. They start green and then turn yellow as they mature. The skin of the fruit is hard and leather, while the meat inside, if it is sweet and golden as with mangoes. In the center of the meat there is a very large cluster of seeds, although these seeds are not generally consumed. Papaya can be consumed raw as many other fruits, or can be cooked in steamed masses or other dishes.
