What is geofhage?

Geofhage is the practice of consuming clay, chalk and other forms of country that are not generally considered to be part of a normal diet. Animals such as birds have been observed with eating clay in different parts of the world. Voluntarily decide to practice geofhage and consider the land as a valid culinary component.

There are several reasons why geofhage is practiced. One of the most studied causes is a psychological disorder called Pica.

In countries where malnutrition is predominant between the human population, it could be consumed from the need for land and mud. In these countries there are some cultures that will mix mud with spices or sugar. It is then formed into cakes, dried in the sun and consumed as a meal.

Although there is evidence of geofhage existing in many places around the world, the danger to people's ingestion can be significant. One of the closest health threats of geofhage is the blockage of the intestine, a condition in which the material is formed by a strong blocking in the digestive tract.
