What are monoamins?

"Monoamins" is a term used to describe neurotransmitters that act to transfer nerve or neuron signals to the cell. They play an important role in metabolism or brain processing and evoke many different behavior. Monoamins fall into two categories - catecholamines and indolamines - and there are different neurotransmitters in each class. Catecholamines consist of neurotransmitters such as epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine, and indolamines include a neurotransmitter serotonin.

Especially occurs in the brain, in the lining of the gastrointestinal tractand in the platelets placed in the blood. Serotonin has a role in controlling state of consciousness and mood, and it works to inhibit gastric secretion from the gastrointestinal tract.

Monoamins are neuromodulators, which means they are able to stimulate many neurons that are located far apart. As a result, monoamins are able to produce many different behavioral results. Monoamins are divided by naturally occurring enzymes called monoamine oxidases (MAOS).
