What are the semicircular channels?
semicircular channels are filled with liquid, roughly semicircular tubes that are part of the structure of the inner ear. The channels sit at right angles together, all connected and detect horizontal and vertical movement and acceleration. The movement of fluid, called endolymphs, inside the channels, causes small hairs or cilia inside the pipes to move and move. Small particles in endolymphs also work for stimulation of cilia. Cilia acts as motion sensors and sends information to the brain that is interpreted to help maintain balance.

An animal that tends to move quietly and in small increments will have smaller semicircular channels and larger animals capable of faster and more agile movement tend to have larger channels. Although the vestibular system, which includes semicircular channels, is similar to most vertebrates, the cochlear system differs greatly between mammals, birds, plasim and amphibians.
