What is fast mapping?

Fast mapping is on one way for children to learn what a particular word means. When they first hear a word, children can often figure out what it means. This instinctive learning method uses information that a child already knows to help him that the word in the right context. Children often narrow the meaning by excluding the possibilities that have words to them and apply an unknown word to an object or an action that no longer has a name.

first described in 1978 by Carey and Bartlett, fast mapping is usually applied to children. Children do not learn their mother tongue through active learning, but rather by picking up words and their meanings in everyday life. For example, the concept of a black cat understands children who identify the word cat as a kind of animal and also as a special inanimate representation of this animal in a book or as a toy. Concept black enters their mind as a color that may relate to many objects because they hear how it is used in this accountec.

All words are new to children at some point in their lives and know three times as many words as they do on one. For example, if the English language can be imagined as a whole dictionary, young children know only some words, with large, empty holes where all potential words could be. As they age, more of these black holes are filled. One way to happen is fast mapping.

An integral part of the fast mapping concept is that children use their acquired knowledge to narrow the range of things that the new word could refer to. A little girl who already knows what a black cat is, for example, has the advantage of being introduced with a black cat and a white cat. If her mother asks her to point to a white cat and not a black cat, a little girl can rule out a black cat ZSEZNAM of the possible things to which her mother refers to.

although the roomIt can be full of new objects, the girl can also exclude them from the list of possibilities because she knows what the cat is. Therefore, using quick mapping can identify a white cat as an object of interest. Then it also has an idea of what White means. On the contrary, if the girl knew what white and black meant, but not what the cat was, the mother could instruct the object and the fact that two creatures were white and black to find out what the cat is.

dogs can also be able to use fast mapping. The 2004 intelligent collie study showed that the dog can bring a new item that he had not seen before, simply by excluding all other items they had the names he knew. Quick mapping is a very fast process and requires only a few seconds. Adults can also quickly map when they are confronted with one new item between known items.
