What is a chipset?

The chipset is a collection of microchips designed for cooperation for performing specific functions. You can find them on computers, smartphones, wireless network devices and many other types of electronic devices. The chipset is often specially designed to work with a specific component, such as the central processing unit (CPU). These microcakes perform many different functions depending on the devices in which they are used. These unique collections of circuits often work behind the scenes to handle many complex components found inside modern electronics. For example, on a personal computer (PC), the chipset is controlled by the interaction between CPUs, memory and other parts of the computer. This closely linked relationship means that chipsets are often optimized for a particular set of hardware.

The number of microchips in the type PC chipset decreased as the technology has evolved. While early chipsets had up to five chips, modern chipsets often contain only two: Northbridge that manages memory and is directly connected toCPU, and Southbridge connected to Northbridge, which processes other components. Some newer motherboards have replaced Northbridge/Southbridge set with a single microchip, although a single chip is still referred to as a chipset.

chipset can also provide special features for some devices. Inside the smartphone can provide global positioning (GPS). The wireless chipset inside the WIFI® network device controls the radio that sends data to other WiFi® devices. The audio version, whether part of the audio card or is built into the PC motherboard, converts digital signals to analog sound.

These several companies sell their proposals to many different hardware retailers. This means competing hardware from differentManufacturers can be powered by the same set of microchips. This has the advantages for end users because the same chipset drivers can sometimes be used on other hardware.

Chipsets can also be found in many other electronics. A printer or scanner may contain specially designed to control their internal hardware. Domestic cinema equipment, such as Blu-ray Disc ™, contains chipsets that allow video and sound playback. Even seemingly simple products such as computer cables and adapters can have chipsets.
