What Is a Wound Rotor Motor?
Wire-wound motors are just one type of asynchronous motor. Asynchronous motor is divided into winding type and squirrel cage type according to the rotor winding form.

- Asynchronous motors are mainly used as motors. It is the most widely used and most demanded type of motor in industrial and agricultural production and in various sectors of the national economy. Metal cutting machine tools, steel rolling equipment, blowers, shredders, water pumps, oil pumps, light industrial machinery, textile machinery, mining machinery, etc., most of them are driven by asynchronous motors. In people's daily life, the application of asynchronous motors is also increasingly widespread. Single-phase asynchronous motors are used in household appliances such as electric fans, washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners. In electric drag, most of the drag motors are asynchronous motors, and their power consumption accounts for about 60% of the total load of the power grid.
- The reason why the asynchronous motor is widely used is that it has the advantages of simple structure, convenient use, reliable operation, high efficiency, easy manufacture and low cost.
- Asynchronous motors have poor speed regulation performance. In the case of requiring a wide range of smooth speed regulation, DC motors are generally used. In the past one or two decades, the AC motor speed control system of asynchronous motors developed on the basis of power electronic devices and microcomputers has improved the speed regulation performance of asynchronous motors, and thus has a wider range of uses.
- When asynchronous motors are running, reactive power must be absorbed from the grid, which will worsen the power factor of the grid. Since the power factor of the grid can be compensated by other methods, this does not prevent the widespread use of asynchronous motors.
- There are many types of asynchronous motors, and there are different classifications from different perspectives.
- According to the number of stator phases, there are single-phase asynchronous motors and three-phase asynchronous motors.
- According to the form of rotor winding, it can be generally divided into two types: wire-wound and squirrel-cage. Squirrel cage asynchronous motors are divided into single squirrel cage, double squirrel cage and deep groove type.
- According to the size or power of the motor, it is divided into large, medium, small and small power motors.
- According to the protection form of the motor, it is divided into open type, protective type and closed type.
- In addition, it can also be classified according to the ventilation and cooling methods, installation structure types, insulation levels, and working methods of the motor during operation, which are not listed here.
