What is a cycling disorder?

Cyclothymic disorder, also called cycling, is a mood disorder with chronic emotional rise and falls. People with a disorder cycle between two extremes in mood and behavior, but may have a period between mood stability. In order to meet the criteria for a cycling disorder, mood fluctuations had to occur for at least two years and the symptoms cannot be sufficiently serious to qualify as a bipolar disorder. Hypomania is a milder, less deactivating level of mania. Several symptoms of hypomania include inflated self -esteem, persistent good mood, irritability, quick speech, poor judgment, less sleep, racing ideas and difficult concentration. People who experience hypomania often report that they feel mild euphoria and extensive amounts of energy and creativity. For this reason, individuals with a cycling disorder and people close to that anything is wrong. Depressive symptoms may include sadness, hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, blame, fatigue and loss of interest in the activities thatyou usually enjoy. Although these periods are not as serious as the main depressive episodes, they can still be very distracting and even dangerous if the individual has suicidal thoughts or behavior.

Cyclothymic disorder usually begins during young adulthood and is considered chronic, which means that it can continue indefinitely. For some people it may persist throughout their lives, or even develop a more serious bipolar disorder. It is not clear exactly what causes a disorder, but, like most mental illnesses, it may result from a combination of genetics, biochemistry and environmental stressors.

There are various treatments that may reduce the frequency and severity of mood fluctuations. Treatment of cycling disorder includes medicines and psychotherapy and many individuals use a combination of these two.
