What is a broadband modem?

The broadband modem is a device that connects the computer with the Internet and other computers on the network. The broadband modem acquires its name by sending and receiving a large amount of data through a wide frequency band, usually using an optical cable or telephone line. This data is changed by a modem when it reaches the computer to become digital signals and convert back to frequencies when sent. Broadband modems replaced older and slower technology of dial -up modem, which required exclusive use of the telephone line. The Modems originally managed to achieve only very limited data transfer speeds and dialing modems that used the same frequencies as the phone line, reached its peak to 53,000 bits per second. Asymmetric digital subscriber lines (ADSL) and cable connections are able to offer much faster data transfer speed using the top range of telephone line in the case of ADSL and fiber optics for cable

These data transmission methods allow you to use a wider range of frequencies, creating more space in which the data can travel. For example, the T1 broadband line can reach a transfer rate of 1,544,000 bits per second. Broadband is actually a relative term and can only be used only when comparing one method with another. For example, data transfer via an optical fiber line can be considered a broadband connection compared to the dialing modem due to the wide frequency field it uses. There is currently no international standard that indicates how wide the frequency belt must be before it can be defined as wide, although fiber and ADSL are considered to be in this category.

One important thing to note about any broadband modem is that the data transfer mechanism is asymmetric, which means that the modem is able to download information much faster thanIt can record, usually in the area ten times as much. The broadband modem can be internal or external for the computer and its size and location will not change its transmission skills. Also, many devices, such as mobile phones and laptops, can now connect to the Internet using a wireless broadband system that works through the waves of mobile phone carriers. Most Internet providers will offer a broadband modem as part of a starter package for consumers and is usually available for rent or purchase.
