What Is a Foil Bearing?

Foil bearing refers to a sliding bearing that uses a flexible foil to suspend a shaft by hydrodynamic or static pressure. Foil bearing is a new type of bearing developed in the 1950s. The belt is used as the elastic foil, and the hydrostatic pressure suspension shaft is called a foil tape hydrostatic bearing, and the hydrodynamic pressure suspension shaft is called a foil tape hydrostatic bearing.

After being tightened, the foil band is fixed with a pressure plate and a locking device. The three fan-shaped sections cover the journal, which is equivalent to three bearing pads. When the shaft rotates, the lubricant enters the three fan segments with the shaft due to the viscosity, forming a dynamic pressure lubrication film, so that the foil strip deforms and comes out of contact with the shaft. This principle can also be used to establish a lubricating film between the moving foil strip and the rigid surface (cylindrical surface, circular arc surface, plane) that plays a guiding role, to avoid direct contact between the foil strip and the guide surface, thereby reducing friction. Foil bearings have no wear, no mechanical vibration and noise, long service life, and can be used as a lubricant for gas, steam or liquid. Foil has large elasticity, so by appropriately controlling the deformation of the foil by pulling or bending, the bearing capacity, stiffness and high-speed stability can be controlled. When calculating this type of bearing, the elastic deformation of the foil must be considered according to the theory of elastohydrodynamic lubrication.
