What is acromioplasty?
Acromioplasty is a surgery performed in a patient who experiences pain and weakness in the shoulder caused by a condition known as impingement syndrome. The tendons pass under the Acromion bone at the top of the shoulder blade and if these tendons are injured or inflamed, they can wipe on the underside of the acromion. Acromioplasty is performed to smooth or remove any rough pieces of acromion to create more space for the movement of tendons. Inflammation of the tendons in the shoulder, especially the rotator cuff, may also be caused by excessive use or repeating activities such as painting or lifting. If the patient experiences persistent pain that is not relieved against inflammatory substances, rest or ice, the surgeon may want to perform acromioplasty. You can also order other tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to provide a view of any fluid present in the shoulder. If the surgeon feels that acromioplasty will be beneficial to the patient, the procedure procedure may beEden as open surgery or as arthroscopic surgery.
open acromioplasty is done by cutting on the front of the shoulder to look fully at tendons and muscles. The surgeon can remove the front of the Acromion bone and shave any combs from the underside of the bone to provide a smooth surface. Then the range of motion can be evaluated while the cut is open. This open surgery may require a longer recovery time, but gives the surgeon more access to the shoulder area.
Acromioplasty can also be performed as an arthroscopic procedure in which several small cuts are carried out in the shoulder area. Arthroscope that inserted the camera and light source to look at acromion and shoulder joint. Surgical tools are also inserted to scratch or remove a part of the acromion. This arthroscopic procedure is less invasive and the recovery time is shorter.
patient should expect thatHe spends after progressing acromioplasty to spend from a few hours to night in the hospital. There may be pain and swelling that can be treated with ice and pain drugs. The surgeon can also prescribe physical therapy exercises that would start a day or two after surgery. In general, it is important that the patient follows the recommendation of the surgeon and physiotherapist to return to the shoulder of full movement.
