The umbilical cord is the connecting structure between the fetus and the placenta. At the other end of these two blood vessels, many interconnected capillary networks are formed, which are distributed in the placental villi. Through the penetration of placental villous epithelium, material exchange occurs between the fetal disc fluid and maternal blood in the villous space.
