What is piriform sinus?
Piriform sinus, also commonly spellable pyriform sinus, is a feature of pharynx or human neck. It is contained in the hypopharynx, which is the lower part of the pharynx, which is located between the hyoid bone on the front of the neck and the lower limit of cricoid cartilage, where the larynx or voice cabinet begins. Piriform sinus is a narrow fossa or depression located on both sides of the larynx hole. It is a common place of hypopharyngal cancer, with almost 70 percent of cancer affecting the lower neck. Nosopharynx, also known as the upper or epipharynx, connects the nasal cavity to the back of the mouth. Behind the tongue is the central part, meso- or oropharynx, where the mouth opens into the neck. The lowest part of the pharynx is Hypopharynx or Htangopharynx, which begins behind the hyoid bone, the U -shaped bones to which the muscles of speech and swallowing are attached. It runs down towards the larynx, ends, where the soft tissue flap known as Epiglottis closes the larynx - the path to the trachea and the lungs - from the esophagus during swallowing.
Hypopharynx can be divided into three sections: rear pharynx, postcricoid area and piriform sinus. Above the esophagus at the back of the neck is the rear pharynx wall, while the postcracid area lies forward, inside the space behind the opening of the epiglottis to the larynx and behind the rear wall of the cricoid cartilage of the larynx. The formation of the side or side of the pituitary of pituitary, visible from the front, is a piriformal sinus. It creates a few niches in the shape of a tears that fall on both sides of Epiglottis, where it opaches. It is not unusual, food that is not properly swallowed can be stuck in this space and increase the risk of aspirating or entering the trachea instead of the esophagus.
Clinical significance is also the frequency of pharynx cancer in piriform sinus. While only a third of the cancer of the hypopheryngeal cancer are found in postcricoid and rear areas of the pharynx, almost 70 percent are located in piriform sinus. These cancersy tend to be spinocellular carcinomas and tend to penalize people who previously were frequent tobacco and/or alcohol users.
