What Is the Vestibular System?

The vestibular system is a group of devices in the inner ear that regulates head balance. It is mainly composed of an oval capsule, a balloon and three semicircular canals. Because the upper semicircular canal and the posterior semicircular canal are at right angles, and the two are at right angles to the horizontal semicircular canal, it is easy to detect the rotational movement in either direction. The sensory area inside the ellipsoid and balloon is called cystic plaque, which is composed of "flat plates" of sensory cells, covered by a gelatinous film of "otoliths" containing calcium carbonate.
