What Is a Perihelion?
Each star's orbit around the sun is roughly an ellipse, and its long and short diameters are not much different, and can be approximated as perfect circles. The sun is at a focal point of the ellipse, and the focal point is not at the center of the ellipse. Therefore, the distance between the star and the sun is sometimes closer, sometimes further. When it is closest to the sun, this point is called the perihelion.
