What is Perihelion?

Perihelion is a point in the orbit of the Earth, where it is closest to the sun. The opposite is called Aphelion, where the Earth moves the farthest. During Perihelion, the sun light is more intense due to increased proximity. This event usually occurs in January, several weeks after the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. Although it might seem that it should be summer for everyone when the Earth is near the Sun, the seasons are determined by the inclination of the planet, not its location in space. In Perihelion, the country is nearly 92 million miles (about 147.5 million kilometers) from the Sun, while in Aphelion it is close to 95 million miles (around 152.6 million kilometers).
