What is sour gas?
The term acid gas covers any type of gas or gaseous mixture, which when mixed with water forms an acidic compound. The most common types of sour gases are hydrogen sulphide (H 2 sub) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). The acid gases are found in natural gas and must be removed by a process known as an amino gas before natural gas usable. While the terms sour gas and sour gas are often used by mistake to describe acid gases, the terms are not the same. The acid gas contains a high amount of hydrogen sulfide, while the real sour gas contains one of the acid gases. However, carbon dioxide is acid gas but not technically sour gas. These acidic materials must remove the gases before use. This is achieved by the process of amino gas processing, referred to as matching. The process takes certain liquids and uses it to remove the harness of hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide or other combination of acid gases from natural gas.

There are several types of organic compounds of ethanolamine. Conventional compounds used in the matching process include monoethanolamine (Mea) and methylidiethanolamine (MDEA).
