What was the Nimrod expedition?
The Nimrod expedition, formally known as the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09, was the first of the three expeditions to Antarctica led by explorer Ernest Shackleton to become one of the most famous Antarctic explorers. Despite its name, the expedition was not sponsored by the state or large institutions, but by rich individuals who benefited by having natural features named after them.
Expedition Nimrod, named after her ship, 300 -ton Nimrod, left Great Britain on August 7, 1907. The expedition was characterized by decorative flourishing, such as motor traction and Manchurian Ponies, which prevented more than it helped. The expedition also brought the sled, which in 1911 used Roald Amundsen to reach the South Pole, but they were only employed by Shackleton in the base camp.les (2 750 km). At first glance, the boat was freely cut off to travel under its own power. After several attempts to land in King Edward VII Land had to expedition nImrod change the course to McMurdo Sound, which Shackleton had previously promised to leave the more popular Antarctic explorer Robin Falcon Scott.
After a difficult landing and unloading, the Nimrod expedition went to Cape Royds. To give his expedition an immediate purpose, the Shackleton ordered an attempt at the top of Mount Erebus, 12.450 ft (3,790 m) of the high mountain on the island of Ross, which has not yet been summarized. After a week of hiking up and down from the mountain, the team completed a successful overthrow and returned to Cape Royds "Almost Dead."
The largest part of the journey has just begun. On October 28, 1908, a four-member party, including Shackleton, launched a march-award to the South Pole to the south. From the beginning, the party was loaded with ponies that brought, with a pony, which must be shot every few days due to limping caused by walking on broken ice surfaces.
After about a week of traveling, the expedition Nimrod began to let go of the unknownThe territory, rising at the foot of the Antarctic Mountains and walked through them through the newly discovered Beardmore glacier. During their ascent they lost a pony - and an almost expedition member - a deep crack.
After almost a month of continuing traveling around the mountains, the expedition reached as far as it could - about 100 miles (160.93 km) from the South Pole or 88 degrees south. After 73 days of travel, the party returned to Cape Royds just in time to catch his ship before he had to leave to avoid freezing in the ice. Meanwhile, another separate party from the same expedition reached the south magnetic pole and surveyed in the Dry Valleys McMurdo area. Successful in many ways, but without achieving the Grand Prix of the South Pole, Nimrod expedition closed on June 14, 1909, when the party returned to England.
