What Is Limbic Encephalitis?
Encephalitis-like changes in the hippocampal gyrus, zonular gyrus, and frontal orbital surface of the limbic system of the brain were found only in pathological examinations, but clinically there was no "encephalitis" -like manifestations. The onset is mostly subacute, which progresses for several weeks, and can also be insidious. Early manifestations of anxiety and depression are followed by severe near memory loss. Others still have irritability, confusion, hallucinations, partial or generalized epilepsy, drowsiness, and some have progressive dementia, which can be relieved occasionally, and dementia and memory loss are characteristic. CT and MRI of the head show a few abnormalities in the medial temporal lobe. EEG may be normal, or bilateral or unilateral temporal or slow waves may appear.
