What are the different types of loop ileostomy?
There are four different types of loop ileostomy, standard loop ileostomy, double barrel of ileostomy, colostomy loop and Hartmann case. There are two other types of ileostomy, continental ileostomy and ileo-anal reservoir. The loop ileostomy can be temporary or permanent, while the other two types of ileostomy are always permanent.
ileostomy is performed when the patient has digestive problems such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, familial polyposis or cancer. During surgery, the rectum and the large intestine are removed or bypass. The waste products discharge from the body through the stoma, the surgically created port created when the end of the lowest part of the small intestines, or ileum is brought through the abdominal wall. The method of cleaning this waste depends on the type of ileostomy.
The most common form of loop ileostomy is standard or brooke, ileostomy. The end of the ilee is stretched by the abdominal wall to form a stoma. The stoma is usually placed on the lower right side of the abdomen. The patient has no control over the output of the waste and must wear a collection case at all times. The waste contains digestive enzymes that can irritate the skin, so it is important for the patient to protect the area around the stoma.
The double barrel of the ileostomy is meant as a temporary measure. The surgeon creates two stoms, one to remove waste products and the other to drain the mucus material. The second stoma does not require a collection case, only gauze.
The loop colostomy is used in situations where there is an immediate requirement for the departure of waste products, for example in the case of intestinal obstruction. The loop of the large intestine near the obstacle is brought to the skin to form a stoma. The stoma can be created from any point in large intestines, rather than the lowest point of thin intestines, like other forms of ileostomy. The colostomy of the loop requires the bag system.
Hartmann's pouch is a procedure where the intestine protated with the abdominal wall to form a stoma, as in a standard loop of ileostomy. Rather than removing the small intestine section leading into the colon, it is fastened or stitched closed and placed back in the body. This is usually for individuals who do not require ileostomy as a permanent solution.
continent of ileostomy and ileo-anal ileostomy are permanent solutions and are not considered loops of ileostomy. Nor do they require a case. A patient with a continent of ileostomy empties the inner case several times every day with a catheter. The patient with the ileo-anal tank has natural bowel movements because the pouch is internally connected to the rectum. The patient's sphincter muscles cannot be damaged to prevent leakage.
