What is iliac ridge?
Iliac Crest Gard is a bone graft in which a piece of bone is removed from the upper area of the patient's pelvis and implanted in another place in the body of this patient. These bone grafts are called autographs and are used primarily to replace the bone lost for injury or illness. Bone grafts are used in many parts of the body and help in healing bones that were broken or bones that did not properly form at birth.
Ilium is the largest bone of the hip. It consists of the right and left half, which together create a pelvic pelvis in the shape of a wing. Iliakal ridge is the upper curved part of each side of Ilia. The large surface area makes the Ilium a favorable place for bone harvest, which is used for the graft of the iliakal ridge.
The Ilia harvested bones are rich in growth factors and cells that stimulate bone growth. Iliac Crest Gard can serve as a framework for new bone growth between two bone pieces. Grafts from the iliakal ridge may be for stabilization of the backbone column necessary fusion POwl. These grafts can also be used to repair split panels, long bone fractures that will not heal, or bone damage caused by traumatic injuries.
There are advantages of harvesting bones from the iliakal ridge and its use as autograph. Implantation of the bone back to the same patient eliminates any graft rejection that could occur if the body recognizes the graft as foreign. Autograph also reduces the chances of orders from another donor.
Harvesting and implanting the graft of the iliakal ridge is a surgery performed by an orthopedic surgeon. Patients would be under a general anesthetic and would have to spend several days in the hospital. The procedure includes two surgical places, one bone repair place and the second place for harvesting the bones. X -ray beams would be ordered to make the area repair before and after surgery to ensure that the graft properly imprintedis.
surgery can be performed as an open procedure in which the surgeon is cut 2 inches (5 centimeters) in the skin through the hip bones. The tissue and muscles are separated and the piece of bone is cut off from Ilia. This bone is shaped and implanted in its final placement. The side effects of the open procedure include pain, bruises and chances of infection. The open procedure allows the harvest of large amounts of Ilium bone.
Another option for surgery is the harvest of a hollow needle or a hit. The cut in the skin is only 0.8 inches (2 centimeters) and the risk of infection is significantly reduced. The recovery time is shorter and the patient usually experiences less pain with this procedure. Complete recovery after Iliac Crest could take up to three months.
