What is chronic hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis is a medical procedure that is performed as soon as the kidneys begin to fail. Chronic hemodialysis means that this procedure must be carried out continuously. In chronic hemodialysis, the patient is connected to a machine that removes blood from the body to filter out toxins before returning the blood to the body. This procedure can take several hours at a time and is often done several times a week. Kidney disease, such as polycystic kidney disease, often proceeds to a point where dialysis treatment is required. Some health conditions, such as diabetes, can also lead to kidney failure. It is also known that poisons and some drugs have a negative impact on the kidney function.

Without proper kidney function, the body is not able to filter toxins or hazardous waste materials, from the body. After a while the toxins accumulate in different cells and tissues of the body, causing a health condition known as uremia. This condition causes excess fluid in the body tissues as well as anemia and electrolyte imbalances. Without treatment can be thisa state potentially fatal. Dialysis such as chronic hemodialysis or renal transplantation is the basic treatment of uremia.

Preparations must be carried out before the start of dialysis, often several weeks or months in advance. The access point for needles used in chronic hemodialysis is necessary. This access point is important because the blood vessels can damage the blood vessels without it. This is especially true because the needles used for this treatment tend to be relatively large.

As far as the access point is concerned, there are several options. The most advantageous method is arteriovenous fistula. This access point requires surgery in which the artery and the vein are connected to each other. This allows the vein to become stronger and larger, making it easier to insert the needle. This method is preferred because it tends to endure longer than other vascular approach methods and there is also less risk of infection notfor other options.

If AV Fistula is not a viable option, the graft can be made instead. In this procedure, the path between the artery and the vein using the synthetic tube is created. In some situations, a temporary catheter can be placed in one of the larger veins, for example in a weakness or neck. This catheter can be used as an access point until another type can be used.
