What is Ductus Botalli?

Ductus Botalli, also known as Ductus arteriosus, is one of three small passages or short -circuits in the heart of a developing fetus. It connects the pulmonary artery with an aortic arch, allowing the blood to circumvent the developing lungs of the fetus. Ductus botalli triggers biological signals to close shortly after birth. If the short circuit is unable to close, the result is a potentially serious but treatable congenital heart condition called patent ductus arteriosus.

named after the Italian doctor of the 16th century Leonardo Botallo, Ductus Botalli provides a route for Fetus blood to travel from the right ventricle. While the fetus develops in the womb, the lungs remain compressed. Ductus Botalli allows the right chamber to train and strengthen without subjugating it from the immature lungs. Lung capillaries open, causing the pressure in the pulmonary artery to drop under pressure in the aorta for the first time in the development of an infant. Lungs release a peptide called bradykinin that works on lowering blood pressureu, causing blood to flow out of Ductus Botalli. The levels of prostaglandin previously supplied by the mother of autumn, which encourages smooth muscle cells in the walls of passing to the contract. It seals the pipes within two weeks after birth.

If Ductus Botalli cannot close, the resulting congenital heart is called the patent ductus arteriosus. In the patent ductus arteriosus, it allows open or "patent" pipes to continue to pass between the pulmonary artery and the aorta.
