What is GPS?

GPS means a global positioning system. It refers to a system of satellites and receivers that allow people and devices to determine their accurate placement on the ground. The heart of the system relies on 24 satellites orbiting the planet twice a day. Equipped with GPS devices receive transmissions from at least a few satellites and are able to recognize very accurate positioning data. New satellites are regularly launched to replace aging. As the technology has improved, the cost of equipment that includes this technology has decreased while the accuracy has increased. Small portable GPS receivers have become very affordable and accuracy is amazing. The accuracy varies depending on different factors, but can be as good as a few yards (meters). Ground superstructure devices can be used to improve accuracy if higher accuracy is required.
