Kunming's pleasant weather makes exercising on foot or by bicycle very easy. You can walk or bike within the city as distances between destinations can often be easily managed. And like in most other Chinese cities, walking and cycling around a city can offer travelers a glimpse into the daily life of the locals that tourist attractions might not provide.

People looking for the perfect place to take a run or walk, or even to do taiji, can check out Cuihu Park. Kunming also has a zoo for those seeking fun and excitement on a nice day. In addition, particular areas of the city, like Green Lake Park, the Bird and Flower Market, and Yunnan Universtiy are pleasant areas to explore on a sunny day, and are all within walking distance of each other.

Though stand alone fitness centers may be harder to find, you can usually find some form of exercise room or equipment at many of the major hotels.

Additionally, the university will organize various sporting activities, as well as provide facilities like basketball courts and gymnasium for people to play basketball and badminton.

  • Cuihu Park

Cuihu Park is predominately a lake surrounded by greenery. Cuihu Pakr has a large and elaborate network of waterways and winding paths, and is a relaxing and beautiful hideaway with broad, lotus-covered pools and overhanging willows. It is a great place to join thousands of others exercising, doing taiji, singing or feeding flocks of gulls. The park is a twenty minute walk north of the museum via Dongfeng Xi Lu and Cuihu Nan Lu.

    Yuantong Si

Learn to Speak ChineseAnother nice place to take a walk or a run is the Yuantong Si. East from Cuihu Park along Yuantong Jie is the Qing-Vintage Yuantong Si. Yuantong Si is northern Yunnan's major Buddhist site, recently spruced up and an active place of pilgrimage. A bridge over the central pond crosses through an octagonal pavilion dedicated to a multi armed Guanyin and marble Sakyamuni, to the threshold of the main hall, where two huge central pillars wrapped in colorful, Manga-esque dragons support the ornate wooden ceiling. Faded frescoes on the back wall were painted in the thirteenth century.

    Kunming Zoo

Kunming Zoo offers nice vignettes of children stroking and feeding the deer, along with views of the city from a hilltop planted with crab-apple groves.
