There are several financial institutions in Tibet, such as the stations of central bank, and the branch offices of China Agriculture Bank, Industry and Commerce Bank, Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Tibet Autonomous Region Trust and Investment Co., and City Trust Agency, as well as postal savings service. The number of financial institutes is around 600. They cover all the cities, towns, agricultural locations and ranches in the region. Bank of China, Construction Bank and Agriculture Bank set their branches in Lhasa. Agriculture Bank has the most banking outlets and branches of Construction Bank have been connected with a network. There's a branch of Construction Bank at the west junction of the square of the Potala Palace. The ATM has been hooked up to the network and cash can be drawn with credit cards there. Renminbi (RMB) is the currency in Tibet. Only the Bank of China offers foreign exchange services and facilities in Tibet and certain up market hotels (Lhasa Hotel, the former Holiday Inn, and Tibet Hotel). Bank of China All the Bank of China accepts all cash travelers' checks, but only the main office offers cash advances on major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Diners Club and Amex).

The Tibetan phone system is reliable. Phone calls can be made from public telephone booths with IC cards or in Telecommunication Centers. There are two Telecommunication Centers in Lhasa, one opposite the Yin Qiao Hotel and the other at the west end of Beijing Dong Lu. IP card service connecting most China cities and many countries is also available in Lhasa.A three minute call (to the UK or US ) will cost approx. RMB 20 from a telephone centre or with a prepaid phone card can be bought from shops, hotels and kiosks. Mobile phone services are available in Lhasa and other major towns. Pagers and mobile phones with roaming function also provide tourists with a convenient alternative form of communication.
International mail service is available at the post offices next to the Telecommunication Centers. The postal service is good and stamps are available everywhere. An overseas stamp for a postcard will cost approximately RMB 5.
