What is MIBG scanning?
MIBG Scanning is a painless diagnostic imaging test that is used to check two common types of nerve tumors. MIBG means meta-implementationlguanidine, a radioactive compound containing iodine isotop-123. A small amount of compound is injected into the bloodstream and circulates throughout the body for about one day. The specialized type of radiological machine is then used to control any unusually heavy MIBG concentrations, indicating a tumor. MIBG scanning results help doctors to make correct diagnoses and determine the best treatment.
Doctors usually perform MIBG scanning to look for neuroblastoma or tumors of feochromocytoma, two cancers that are commonly observed in infants and young children. Young patients who worsen abdominal pain, tremor and sweating are scheduled to scan if simpler imaging tests and blood work cannot detect the cause. An adult patient who develops suspicious symptoms may also need MIBG scanning. The procedure is usefulThe radioactive material tends to collect in tumors and slightly and evenly distracted in the rest of the body. When MIBG scan is scanned, the scanner detects gamma rays emitted by the decaying iodine isotope.
Patients are usually instructed to stop taking non-ive drugs for a few days before testing to prevent adverse reactions to drugs. The oral solution of super -potassium, which helps protect the thyroid gland from harmful radiation, is often prescribed to be taken from, during and after scanning MIBG. The first day of testing is used by an intravenous needle for injection of carefully measured doses of MIBG in your hand or foot. No special monitoring is required until the following day.
When it is time for MIBG scanning, the patient is asked to lie on the table and stay as much as possible. The scanning machine is located just above the patient body and on. During testingis collected by several dozen pictures that can take one and three hours. Diet and medicine restrictions usually go after the procedure immediately and the patient can go home if it is healthy enough to do so. The test results may take several days to be thoroughly analyzed by a team of radiologists.
with MIBG scanning there are few risks and most patients do not experience discomfort during testing or after testing or after testing. The radiation exposure is low and the remnants of iodine brands are completely excluded within a few days. Patients testing positively on tumors are treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. After treatment, subsequent MIBG controls can be designed to ensure that the tumors react.
