What is arthrogram?

Arthrogram is a medical procedure in which the joint images of a contrast medium are caused, a substance that improves the visibility of the structures to be examined. Arthrogram images can be produced through X -rays, computer tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MRI) scanning. The arthrogram is either diagnostic, in order to determine the source of any disease or defects in the joint or therapeutic, as a form of treatment for a known condition.

Either ultrasound or fluoroscopy, X -ray procedure, is used to inspect the joint before the arthrogram. The technician uses these methods to correctly place the needle in the joint to insert a contrast medium that can be gaseous, soluble in water or both depending on the type of images required. Injection is usually performed under local anesthetic. Fluoroscopy can produce images from a number of different angles, while displaying CT and MRI allows a series of cross -sectional images to collect. Arthrogram allows you toThe soft tissue of the joint, including muscles, bindings, cartilage, tendons and joint capsules, of which none of them would be visible by regular X -ray. Therapeutic arthrogram is usually used for joint destinies or cortisone injection for damaged joints.

generally carries an arthrogram of the same risk as any X -ray or MRI procedure. In addition, patients with allergies or sensitivity to local anesthetic or contrast medium to be used should not undergo a procedure due to the risk of infection at the injection site. Other conditions that may be a risky arthrogram include pregnancy, any history of allergic reactions, asthma, arthritic pain at the time of the procedure, diabetes, or the known infection to be displayed. Before performing the arthrogram, inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions.

Patients with advanced kidney disease are also exposed to risksto a potentially fatal state known as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) when Gadolinium is used as a contrast medium in arthrogram. NSF causes the development and reduction of mobility. It can also affect internal organs.
