What is a newborn fan?

The neonatal fan is a medical device used in newborn units of intensive care (NICU), which helps newborns to maintain the right blood gas levels. Although ventilation refers to removal of carbon dioxide from the blood, these devices also help to supply oxygen to a child. These devices are usually used in premature children whose lungs have not fully developed, but can also treat full -fledged newborns who have breathing problems. Neonatal fans have different forms, but all are usually short -term treatment until the lungs are able to properly regulate blood. The ventilation is reduced and removed because the lungs are more capable of promoting the correct blood gas levels by spontaneous breathing. The type of neonatal fan used in NICU varies depending on the availability and target of the ventilation.

Positive pressure fans that rely on r regular lung functions are most commonly used. This device uses a tubeInserted into the airways and acts similarly to a machine with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) used to treat sleep apnea in adults. This type of fan synchronizes with infant respiratory patterns for blood exchange. These devices are ineffective if they fail to synchronize the respiratory rhythm of the newborn because they may supply oxygen during exhalation. Most newer versions have sensors to determine the respiratory pattern.

volume fans, sometimes called tidal fans, are another type of neonatal fan device. This fan provides a predetermined volume of gases at regular intervals of the tube in the nose or mouth of the baby. Ventilation equipment of this kind is often used in infants or surgery, but most models give too much a tide of gases for premature children. This device relies on the ability tolungs expand and collapse when it adds gases.

A child that does not improve from the traditional newborn of the fan can be placed on a high -frequency fan. It may also be the first option in cases of extreme prematureness, as conventional mechanical ventilation can damage the lung development. The high -frequency ventilation method forces the lungs rather than waiting for the child to breathe. This form of a newborn fan should be used if the newborn does not make a spontaneous breath. As the lungs of ripening and respiratory functions increase, the child can be switched to one of the other newborn fan devices.

All neonatal fans must be carefully monitored and maintained. The respiratory device may be harmful if it does not work properly or exchanges gases at the wrong time. It is also possible to dedicate to the child with these devices, which can lead to chemical imbalances such as alkalosis.
