What is a remedy for rest?

The rest of the treatment was the treatment of what was considered hysteria in women. In the 19th century, it had great popularity as a way to treat women with mental illnesses that could later be called a generalized anxiety disorder or great depression. This could also apply to higher -class women who have been simply exhausted by domestic children, supervise large households or suffered after birth after birth after the birth of the child.

Silas Weir Mitchell developed the rest of the treatment. Basically, he trapped women for up to two months and gave them little contact with the outside world. In the first few weeks, women have not been allowed to involve their mind by reading or performing small activities. Most of them were not allowed to turn over their beds, suggesting that they could be limited.

According to Dr. Mitchello about the residual drug in his treatise fat and blood , until the fifth or sixth day, most women became "tracked". And the monotony stored. ThisThe statement suggests that many women are likely to fight this treatment during the initial days of imprisonment.

Mitchell clearly saw some success with his treatment, which also included daily massage, and probably clitoral stimulation, as common for hysteria treatment. It is fair to say that most women today would evaluate Cure as a terrible, punishment caused by women who were perhaps only nervous or suffered from mental illness. Given that the spouses were often allowed to decide on their wives, the husband's perception could determine whether a woman could withstand a remedy for rest. Not surprisingly, many women saw cooperation as a means of leakage from Mitchell's rest.

One of the most interesting indictments of the rest is a fictitious piece of "yellow wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The work describes from the perspective of the first person's gradual madness of the woman undergoing the treatment of rest. Gilman even sent a copy of Dr. MitchelloVI who didn't answer. In fact, Gilman's central character is powered by the remaining treatment to restore her common sense. Her loneliness and her complete separation from her family are dwelling and making an effective argument against the residual drug.

Gilman, however, is wrong because the rest of the treatment is likely to not cause madness. Its application could worsen the condition of someone with a slight to medium psychological problem. Today, even the institutionalization of people with mental illnesses is not focused on solitude, but on the integration of a sick person into regular activities such as daily group therapy, class of management strategies and everyday activities such as therapeutic art.

Dr. Mitchell's treatment can also be classified as extremely sexist because the rest has been almost always applied. Since many have been considered very different from men and also led by their hormones, the rest should be applied to what was considered a female diseasethe mind. “Cure” was aimed at women because of the basic lack of understanding women. This was also almost always applied to middle to higher -class women, because working women were considered more robust and less susceptible to hysteria.

6 A greater understanding of hormonal function in women has helped to develop men and women. Current understanding of the chemical effect of the brain has also helped develop drugs that can significantly alleviate anxiety or great depression. Mitchell's rest remedy is now considered by many to be a further violation of women's rights at a time when they were unable to be their own defense counsel for equal treatment of members of the medical community.
