What is Argon Laser trabekuloplastics?

trabekuloplastics of argon laser or alt is a type of surgery of glaucoma. Glaucoma is the name given to a group of disorders that damage the optical nerve of the eye and which bear the risk of blindness if it is not treated. Argon trabeculoplastics is used to treat the form of glaucoma known as open angle glaucoma, where the pressure inside the eye, called intraocular pressure, is too high. The ALT procedure reverses this increase in pressure by the laser to burn the holes in the eye drainage area, allowing the fluid to escape. Open -angle glaucoma is associated with abnormalities in the drain of fluid from the eye. All around the edges of the colored part of the eye or iris lies a structure known as a trabecular net. The trabecular network usually behaves like a sieve, allowing the fluid to be drained from the eyeball, but at the open angle of Meshwork glaucoma is partially blocked. Since the fluid can no longer pass from the eye so easily, over time the pressure inside and damages the optical nerve.

First, medicines can be administered in the form of eye drops to reduce intraocular pressure. If different drugs were tested and could not stop glaucoma progression, surgery such as argon laser trabeculoplastics may be performed. The procedure is done by local anesthetic, with the patient up and sitting on the chair and lasting about ten to 20 minutes.

During the Argon trabeculoplastics, the person's forehead and chin are supported by a machine called a slot lamp, a type of microscope used to guide the laser. Eye drops are used to reduce the pupil and a dull eye and a contact lens is inserted. The lens helps to provide a clear view of trabecular netting. Finally, the lens moves and the laser is used to perform a few minutes of burns in the trabecular network and opens the channels through which the liquid can drain.

once or two hours after Argon trabeculoplastics, the pressure in the eye will be checked. The patient may be administered with eye drops that are used for several timesIka weeks to reduce any inflammation. The vision may initially seem blurred, but it usually solves within a few days. It is not possible to know in advance whether treatment will work, so for some people the disadvantage of the procedure that their eye pressure did not reduce and the procedure of their glaucoma continues.
