What is Tayberry?

Tayberry is one of several hybrid berries created by crossing the blackberry with raspberry. It comes in Scotland and is named on the Tay Scottish River. The fruit is mostly grown in small home gardens and is consumed raw or made of fruit span or desserts. It is often compared favorably with Loganberry and Boysenberry, which are somewhat known Blackberry-Raspberry hybrids. Jennings was also responsible for the Glen clova Raspberry, Loch Ness Blackberry and several other berries that were commercially successful in the UK and worldwide. Both men developed Tayberry by crossing aurora blackberry with polyploid Malling sport raspberries. He was first bred in 1962, but he was not commercially released until 1979. With large sweet berries and a pleasant scent, the plant was a hit with domestic growers. The Trozko shrub runs along the ground before it sent strict shoots or "sticks". The shrub can be grown from seeds or root cuttings. Red-violetThe berries are larger and sweeter than most Raspberry or Blackberry varieties, but still retains some wine. Shrubs bring a lot of fruit that can be harvested from July to August.

There are several disadvantages for domestic growers trying to cultivate Tayberry. The plant is susceptible to damage to cold weather and does better in the climate with fine winter; Mulch can be used to protect the roots from the cold. It is also sensitive to viruses. The stems are weak and are better if they are leaning with a grid. Finals, new sticks will only bear fruit since the second year.

varieties Tayberry include Tummelberry, which is harder, but not so sweet; Buckingham Tayberry who does not have thorns; and Medana Tayberry, which is certified without viruses. Fruit called Hildberry - allegedly named for the wife of the breeder - was created by crossing Tayberry with Boysenberry.

Tayberries can be used just like raspberries. They caneat directly from blackberry or made into jams, jelly, cobbles, cakes and other fruit desserts. Several winery in the UK makes and sells red wine Tayberry. It is said to be sweet and full of body.
