What is grog?
GROG is, the simplest mixture of water and rum, with more complex versions add spices, citrus fruits or sugar. Grog data from the mid -18th century, when it was introduced as a way to reduce drunk on ships in the British Royal Navy. Historically, the problem of liquid on board boats was during long sailors' trips for sailors to deal with. Water tends to grow algae and other plant life and beer tends to spoil on long roads. As a result, when rum was introduced in the mid -17th century, it quickly became a drink for maritime naval worldwide. The British Navy mattered especially and after 1655 the daily dose of ½ pint of rum was given to the sailors. Unfortunately, many sailors happened under the influence of alcohol and unfortunate rum drinking, a problem that men worsened men who saved their daily rations until they had a significant amount stored, that they could drink at once.
In 1756, Admiral Vernon came up with the idea of diluting rum rum with water. Thanks tOmu was not only less alcoholic, but the water also made rum susceptible to spoiling if the sailors decided to save him. From 1756 to 1970, the British Royal Navy served a daily ration, because tot , aboard on board each ship at 11:00. Admiral Vernon, the inventor of this practice of dilution of rum, was known not only as a friend of sailors, but also for a waterproof cloak, which was made of Grogam's wave. This cloak brought him the nickname Old Grog and after his invention of a new dose, the nickname was transferred to his creation.
In later years, Citrus was added to the traditional Royal Navy Grog to avert the scrape among the sailors. Because sailors on board the royal navy vessels often had to walk for many months without fresh fruit or vegetables, adding lemon or lime juice to their grog helped keep their intake of vitamin C to sufficient levels. Another view of grog, popular aboard pirate vessels, was known as bumbo or bumboo . Given that pirate vessels tend to remain outside for a shorter time and maintained better fed, lime and lemon juice could be omitted from its mixture. Instead, they added sugar, nutmeg and occasionally cinnamon to help taste grog and make it tastier.
