Learn Chinese Language in ChinaFounded in 1956 under its original name, the College of Physical Education, the Capital Institute of Physical Education (CIPE) is a Beijing municipal College.  After graduating, many students will go on to become athletes, coaches, teachers, administrators and entrepreneurs in the sports field.  With the approval of the Chinese Ministry of Education, the college has been accepting international students since 1994. 

China Business ProgramThe institute now offers majors covering all disciplines of physical education and activity, under an organizational system of six departments, including the Specialty of Physical Education, Specialty of Sports Training, Specialty of Kinesiology, Specialty of Social Sports, Specialty of Traditional Sports of Nationalities and the Specialty of Public Administration (Sports).  The institute also has a number of other departments, including the Division of Basic Theory, the Division of Adult Education and the Division of Postgraduates, the Scientific Research Institute of Sports, the Key Laboratory of Beijing and the Athletic School. 

China Business ProgramCIPE's International Exchange Center accepts enrollment of foreign students for their Chinese language students and short-term martial arts programs.  Every year, 200 foreign students visit CIPE to study language, martial arts and traditional Chinese massage, some on short-term courses, others enrolling for longer periods of study. 

CIPE's Chinese as a Second Language Education and Research Center is dedicated to the teaching of Chinese language and culture to foreign students, students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, and short-term groups visiting CIPE to study and take part in cultural exchanges.  At present, CIPE has established academic exchanges with the USA, Finland, Japan, Korea, Russia, Australia, and Switzerland, to name a few. 

Programs

CIPE is comprised of six departments including the Specialty of Physical Education, Specialty of Sports Training, Specialty of Kinesiology, Specialty of Social Sports, Specialty of Traditional Sports of Nationalities and Specialty of Public Administration (Sports).  It offers modern courses such as physical education, sports physiology, sports training and management, traditional minority sports and social physical education.  Martial arts courses are also offered, taught by professional teachers who are well-known in their fields, and have achieved prize-winning success in many national competitions. 

For students studying shadow boxing and tai chi, core courses include an introduction to martial arts, technical requirements and characteristics of shadow boxing, basic skills and movements of shadow boxing, 24 positions of simplified shadow boxing, Yang shadow sword technique, 32 positions of shadow sword, Chen-style shadow boxing, 42 positions of integrated shadow boxing, graphic knowledge of martial arts, teaching of martial arts, and the organization and judgment of martial arts competitions.  CIPE provides the weapons, and other martial arts equipment and facilities.

Core courses for students of Chang Quan (Long Fist Boxing) include an introduction to martial arts, technical requirements and characteristics of Chang Quan, basic skills and movements of different styles of Chang Quan, four types of Chang boxing, combined knife movements, combined sword movements, combined spear movements, combined stick movements, graphic knowledge of martial arts, and the organization and judgment of martial arts competitions.  CIPE provides the weapons, and other martial arts equipment and facilities.

Students studying Qigong will undertake a range of core courses including an introduction to Chinese qigong, method and theory of Qianzi Longmen skill, Zhuji skill, Moyao skill, Chuanzhang Tongli skill, Longmen 13 stakes, and clinical diagnosis of difficult and complicated illnesses. 

CIPE provides Chinese language and culture programs and an excellent environment for international students to learn Chinese.  Certified by the Ministry of Education, all teachers have many years of experience and put highly effective teaching methods to use in teaching Chinese as a second language.  Outside of class, trips are arranged for foreign students two or three times a semester.

The institute's classrooms make for an excellent study environment for Chinese language studies, with language labs, computer labs and multimedia classrooms for studying Chinese language and culture.  There are a maximum of 15 students in each class, so students have excellent opportunities for active participation.  Upon completion of their course, students will receive the appropriate certificate from CIPE. 
 
Long-term semester and one year courses in Mandarin Chinese last for 18 or 36 weeks, with 18-20 hours of classes per week.  Core courses include the following: Listening, speaking, grammar, writing, reading, discussions on culture, tutorial exercises, Chinese grammar exercises, strategies for advanced spoken Chinese, comprehensive Chinese language exercises, and newspaper reading.

Short-term Mandarin Chinese courses are highly flexible, ranging from anywhere between two weeks and three months, with less than 20 hours of classes per week.  The following core classes are included: Listening, speaking, grammar, writing, reading, discussions on culture, social activities and excursions.  For more information, please contact China Travel. 

Teachers

CIPE has advanced educational, training and research facilities.  There are 200 teachers and researchers at the institute, among them 80 professors and vice-professors and 30 MA tutors.  Many of the teachers have been teaching at the institute for many years and are rich in experience.  Most are big names in their field, with many championship wins behind them.  Teachers are also experienced in teaching international students, as demonstrated by the high praise they have earned from the students themselves.

All teachers who teach Chinese language have an advanced Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Certification, as issued by the Ministry of Education, and many years of teaching experience.  They provide teaching tailored to students' needs, meeting a wide range of requirements with excellent results and winning the praise of students. 

Campus Facilities

Library

CIPE Library Tower was established in 1955 and covers an area of 6,122 square meters.  The library is equipped with central air-conditioning, multi-channel video monitoring, multi-channel monitoring doors and other security systems.  The library currently has eight reading rooms, a study hall, a multi-purpose room, a training room, wireless internet zone and four research centers with 740 seats.  The library's collection includes books on physical education, social sports, sports training and sports management, sports medicine, health and rehabilitation, in addition to a variety of other general collections.  There are more than 250,000 volumes of Chinese and foreign language books, including 650 journals and newspapers. 

In 2000, the library established a digital management system, and began a cooperation project with Beijing University's library network in 2001.  The library now has 13 different databases and an electronic reading room which provides 80 seats for users.  In recent years, the institute has attached great importance to supporting the library and building up its resources.  The library is currently focusing on expanding the scope of its content and services, improving management and services for education and research. 


Recreation Facilities

The 11th Asian Olympics, The Yuannan Disabled Games, and the International Military Basketball Championships have all been held in CIPE's large, state-of-the-art stadium.  The campus has gymnasium and leisure facilities, a sauna, swimming pool, table tennis facilities, tennis, badminton, volleyball, and basketball courts, and space for practicing taekwondo and other martial arts. 


Laundry

Washing facilities are available on each floor of the foreign students' dormitory.  The washing machines are operated using special coins which can be bought at the reception desk.  Laundromat, providing dry cleaning services, is also located on campus. 


Money & Banking

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China is located 200 meters away from the campus, while the Bank of China can be found within ten minutes walking distance to the south.  Both banks have 24-hour ATMs, accept all foreign currencies, and foreign students can open foreign bank accounts, as well as foreign banknote accounts. 


Medical Care

A small clinic is available on campus, with Chinese-speaking doctors and nurses.  Students can show their student cards to see the doctors.  An international hospital called SOS is located in Chaoyang District and provides 24-hour services.  The hospital has comprehensive medical services including dentistry, counseling, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nutrition and TCM.  Members have access to around-the-clock telephone consultations and evacuation from anywhere in China.  An on-site pharmacy stocks Western medication and TCM ingredients.  Clinic appointments can be made by calling (8610) 6462-9112, and dental appointments at (8610) 6462-0333. 


Food & Groceries

The university dining hall provides Chinese food at relatively low prices.  There are also many other restaurants nearby, offering international cuisines from Japan, Korea and the West at affordable prices.  A small grocery store is located on campus selling food, drinks, snacks, items for daily use and household items.  The store opens from 8 am – 11 pm everyday.  CIPE is surrounded by various supermarkets and shopping malls, so students will have no difficulty in finding whatever they need.


Postal Services

A post office can be found off campus, but within easy walking distance.  Here, students can send and receive any mail and packages from around the world.  The post office also has post boxes, stamps and envelopes.

Accommodation

Accommodation comes in two options, single and double rooms.  The dormitory for foreign students has favorable living conditions, with good facilities and a nice environment.  Each room is equipped with a TV, telephone, a cooling and heating air conditioner, toilet, shower and basic furniture such as a bed, desk and chair.  Kitchens and washing machines can be found on each floor.  Chinese and English newspapers and periodicals for public reading are available at the dormitory lobby.

Location

Located by the Western section of Beijing's North Third Ring Road, CIPE has a pleasant environment with excellent transport links, and modern teaching and residential facilities.
