Fudan University
Located in Shanghai, Fudan University (FU) was founded in 1905. Originally named Fudan Public School, in 1917 it was renamed Fudan University (its name means 'heavenly light shines day after day'). Fudan University began enrolling international students in 1950. Since then, it has accepted and trained over 10,000 foreign students from 100 different countries. The university occupies an area of more than 2.6 million square meters and its buildings have a total floor space of more than 1.1 million square meters. Famous for its motto "Rich in knowledge and tenacious of purpose, inquiring with earnestness and reflecting with self-practice", it has become one of the top institutions for advanced and higher education in China. In April 2000, with approval from the State Ministry of Education, Fudan merged with the Shanghai Medical University to form a new Fudan University. Fudan University is a comprehensive multi-disciplinary research university with many highly-ranked majors and programs. Moreover, Fudan will also participate in holding the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. Currently, Fudan is focusing on its aspiration to introduce China to the world and to become one of the world's top universities. This goal is being achieved by recruiting and retaining high quality faculty and students, developing competitive research programs, and promoting international academic interaction. Fudan University has active cooperation with over 150 universities and research institutions from 30 countries, including Harvard University, the University of California at Berkeley, Cornell University and Waseda University. At present, there are 25,000 students in the university and an additional 11,000 studying at the schools of Continuing Education and Online Education. At the moment, the amount of international students from all over the world has reached 1,650.
The university is comprised of 17 schools with 66 departments and 4 independent departments (Physics, Chemistry, Macromolecular Science, and Environmental Science and Engineering). International students can study in every specialty offered at Fudan University provided that they have met the university's entry requirements. There are 68 specialties in the Bachelor programs, 209 specialties in the Master programs and 57 specialties in the Doctoral programs. The Department of Mandarin Chinese Language and Literature was founded in 1925 and offers a Mandarin Chinese language program as well as programs related to Chinese literature, Chinese history, Chinese economy, Chinese philosophy and Chinese law. These courses will introduce basic knowledge of Chinese social economy, history and culture. In addition, there is also a language lab, modern literature research room and a research room for Chinese traditional culture. This same department provides Mandarin Chinese programs at all levels for foreign students, including short term and long term courses. The duration of study can be as short as 2 weeks up to one semester and one year (equivalent to two semesters).
The university consists of 17 schools with 70 departments, and operates a high level research faculty of more than 2,300 teachers and researchers, including 1,350 professors and associate professors. Most teachers have been educated overseas, have a strong academic background and are well experienced. The Mandarin Language Program Department has 92 teachers, among whom 33 are professors and 31 are associate professors. Over the past years, all the teachers have made great achievements in teaching and researching. This department has also conducted a variety of interesting Chinese teaching courses in language and literature for overseas students.
Library The library was founded in 1918 under the name Reading Room of Wu Wu. It officially became the Fudan University Library in 1922. The library has an area of 29,000 square meters and a collection of 4.4588 millions books, with around 100,000 new books added annually. The Library also edits and publishes two journals, China Index and Information Services of the Higher Education Institutions in Shanghai. Every day 7,000 visitors go to the library to read and borrow
books, study or have language exchange. It provides 8 open stacks,
2 general reading rooms, 19 special function reading rooms, and
2,400 seats. Online consultation service is available 24 hours. Recreation Facilities Students can enjoy the table tennis rooms, tennis courts, football field, basketball courts, volleyball courts, running track and outdoor swimming pool. The gymnasium only costs RMB 2 per hour, while the weigh-lifting gymnasium is available for free. Fudan University regularly holds sports championships and there are many student sports clubs, with both Chinese and foreigners welcome to participate. These sport clubs include a football club, badminton club, chess club, Chinese chess club, volleyball club, karate club, martial arts club, bridge club, mountain climbing & expedition club, skating club, table tennis club and shadow boxing club, with other new clubs forming on a regular basis. Laundry Every dormitory has washing facilities in the washing room. Each building has one washing room with several washing machines. The Laundromat can be found near the front gate of the campus. If you are not in a hurry, there is a big laundromat 10 minutes walk outside of the campus. Banking A Bank of China and Agricultural Bank of China are located on campus. Each bank has a 24 hour ATM. All banking activities, such as deposits, withdrawals, foreign currency exchange and money transfer can be handled. Medical Care Fudan University has 9 hospitals including the Changhai Hospital, No. 1 Pulmonary Disease Hospital, Shanghai Dental Clinic, Shanghai Mental Health Center, Yueyang Hospital, Zhongshan Hospital, Huashan Hospital, the Obstetrics Hospital, and the Gynecology Hospital. The doctors have been trained overseas and speak good English. Well-stocked pharmacies provide Western medication and TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) ingredients. Payments can be made in cash or by credit card. Doctors are on-duty 24 hours everyday. Fudan University also has a Psychological Counseling Center, which
was established in 1994 and designed to help students solve their
daily problems, strengthen their mental endurance, improve social
flexibility, discover their potential and build integrity. Food & Groceries There are 4 dining halls in Fudan University which offers 3 meals a day at a low price. For business dinners or gatherings, there is the Grand Restaurant at the main campus which offers a nice environment with several balconies. A Muslim restaurant is also open 24 hours everyday. If you are looking for a sandwich and coffee, the 5th Avenue Caf谷 and Sun Leisure Caf谷 can be found at the north campus. Just to the south of the Classroom Building No. 6, there are several Chinese and foreign restaurants, cafes, tea houses, and pastry houses offering a wide variety of culinary options. A grocery store located inside the campus provides snacks, food, drinks, fruits, and other items. A larger grocery store is located 20 minutes away by foot from the main campus. There are 18 book stores inside the campus gate. They sell many
kinds of books, including foreign language books and novels. Students
can even get a discount if they are a member of the Fudan Jingshi
Book Club. Postal Services A post office is available on campus, making it possible to send and receive mail and packages from all over the world.
The Fudan University international student dormitories offer single and double rooms. Each room is equipped with a bed, pillow, chair, desk, desk lamp, toilet, air conditioner, a television, and internet cable. Students can go to the internet center inside campus, ask for an internet connection and pay for an IP address. A deposit for electricity usage every month is required. A public kitchen with a refrigerator and stove can be found on each floor.
