Xi'an Jiaotong University
The Xi'An Jiaotong Unversity (XJU) was originally founded in Shanghai in 1896 and originally called Nan Yang College. In 1921, the university was merged with Shanghai Special Industrial School, Tangshan Special Industrial School, Beiping Railway Management School and Beiping Post and Telecommunications School. During 1955, the State Council decided to move Jiaotong University to Xi'an. In 1959, the State Council agreed that the Xi'an and Shanghai parts of Jiaotong University should become independent. Xi'An Jiaotong University was formally established in the same year. Accredited by the Chinese Ministry of Education, it has become one of the top nine universities in China and established a good reputation overseas. In April 2000, Xi'An Medical University and Shaanxi Institute of Finance and Economics were merged with Xi'An Jiaotong University as well. Xi'An Jiaotong is also a participant in the construction of the "211 Project" in China. The university is determined to become a world-famous high level university. Alumni of Xi'An University have gone on to produce the first dynamo, first radio station, first diesel engine, first Chinese character typewriter and many more innovations. The university is located in Xi'An, the largest city in northwest China. The 181 acre campus is surrounded by pine and cherry trees. It offers an excellent environment, good accommodation, high quality teachers, and social and sport facilities. There are 26,000 students, including 3,000 international students from all over the world. Currently, this university is focusing on setting higher standards and building itself into a world class university.
Xi'An Jiaotong University has a long-established international reputation in research and teaching. It consists of 17 schools and the School of Chinese Language Study. International students can be accepted to study in every specialty, including science, engineering, medicine, economics, finance, management, language and culture, art and law, provided that they have met the university's entry requirements. Xi'An Jiaotong University offers Mandarin Chinese Programs which are 4, 8, and 12 weeks, 1 semester, and 1 year in length. These programs are designed for overseas students from every level and there are 18 - 20 students in each class. Classes cover Chinese reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar. Optional elective courses in orthoepy, Chinese character writing, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese history, shadow boxing, Chinese cooking, Chinese paper cutting, and Chinese music are also available in the afternoon.
The University has a great number of highly qualified and experienced teachers. It has 15,278 teachers and staff members, including 1,600 professors and associate professors. Teaching staff offer a modern higher education in every specialty and many experts come to give lectures and teach. The Mandarin Language Department has a relatively small teaching administration. The teachers are native Chinese speakers with a strong background in teaching international students. The department also has some teachers who do research in linguistics, applied linguistics and literature. Moreover, there is an important project, the Contrastive Study of Chinese, English and Japanese Conversations, funded by the State Foundation of Social Sciences.
Library Founded in 1896, the library originally had the book collection from Nanyang College, and was renamed Jiaotong University Library in 1921. It covers an area of 40,000 square meters with 3,300 seats inside. There are 3,370,000 books and 80,000 volumes are added annually. Students can find many kinds of books, including those for science, engineering, information technology, medicine, finance, economics, management, art and law. Moreover, it has many kinds of foreign language books and periodicals, including 15 world famous periodicals. Currently, over 14,000 unique electronic journals are also available. The library provides a Library Online System, which makes it accessible from every part of the campus, outside campus and worldwide. It also has international cooperation with more than 50 foreign libraries, schools and research institutes. The library is open weekdays 8 am - 9 pm and is always closed on weekends. Recreation Facilities Students can do sports activities in the tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, badminton courts, football field and running track. For those who are interested to work out in a gymnasium, they can walk around 20 minutes to find a big gymnasium. Laundry In every dormitory building, the university provides a washing machine on every floor. Students need to buy special coins if they want to wash their clothes. For dry cleaning service, there is no need to worry because a laundromat is available off-campus within a 20 minutes walking distance. Banking On the Xi'An Jiaotong University campus, there are two banks available: the Bank of China and the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). Both banks provide 24 hours ATM, so students will not have any difficulty depositing and withdrawing money. Medical Care There is a Chinese clinic and pharmacy inside the Xi'An Jiaotong University which is open 24 hours everyday. Within 5 minutes walking distance, there is a big hospital, named Xi Jing Hospital. This hospital provides Western
medication and TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) ingredients at a reasonable price. Most doctors speak good English
and were educated overseas. The hospital is open 24 hours. Food & Groceries There are two grocery stores on campus. The small one is located on campus and a big one is located off-campus just 10 minutes by foot. The opening time is 9 am until 9 pm everyday. A dining hall is available inside the campus which provides many kinds of Chinese food with a low price, at a cost of only around RMB 10 a day. A coffee shop can be found inside the campus and there are a lot of Korean restaurants on campus. It is very convenient to live here, because there is also a bookstore where students can buy stationery, magazines and newspapers. Postal Services A post office is available and there are also some internet facilities. The internet center inside the library is very cheap, costing just RMB1.5 per hour of use. It is open 8 am - 10 pm. In the internet café the price is higher, costing RMB1.5 - 3 per hour, but it is open during weekends.
The dormitories for foreign students have single and double rooms. Each room is equipped with a toilet, telephone, television, air conditioner, central heating, desk, chair, closet, and bed. A public kitchen with electric stove and refrigerator is available on each floor. If students want to get their own internet connection, the price is RMB 100 a month. Students need to plan ahead if they want to use hot water because it is not available 24 hours. The hot water availability is 6:30 am - 8 am; 10:30 am - 1 pm, and 7 pm - 11 pm.
From the airport to the university: 50 kilometers, around one hour by car. From the train station to the university: 5 kilometers, around 15 minutes by car. |
