What is the use of art therapy in schools?

Art therapy is the use of art to help individuals in acts of emotional growth and healing. Proponents of the use of art therapy in schools believe that this practice allows art on arteryrapy to promote emotional growth in students who may suffer from emotional or social disorders. This therapy can also be used in students who have learning disabilities.

The practice of art therapy in schools is based on the notion that the psychosocial development of children is mirrored in the art they create. This is also a phase where the coordination of the hands of the eyes develops. Likewise, children aged seven and nine are beginning to draw in a schematic stage. Therapists practice art therapy with children who may have these disorders, allowing them to communicate ways that are not only verbal. In this sense, art therapy acts as expressive therapy.

Another beneficial use of art therapy in schools is that it allows art therapists to consult faculty members and parents about the child's mental and emotional health. The drawing is considered an act that comes naturally for most children. For this reason, it is less likely that this method of communication intimidates. Children undergoing art therapy can express certain thoughts, problems and concerns that would otherwise fail. The art therapist can use these communications to counsel teachers and parents how to best care or address a child.
