What is laparoscopic pyeloplasty?

Laparoscopic pyeloplasty is a minimally invasive surgery used to repair an obstacle to the kidney base. Patients suffering from frequent urinary tract infections, abdominal pain, urination problems and kidney stones can be assessed to blockages and planned for pyeloplasty operations. The procedure includes the use of endoscopic cameras, surgical instruments and stent, which are inserted by three or more small slices in the abdomen to repair damaged tissue. In most cases, laparoscopic pyeloplasty may be completed in less than three hours and patients can expect full pulling in about one month.

The kidney base meets the ureter at the ureteropelvic intersection (UPJ). Blocking in the UPJ or narrowing of the highest part of the urea tube can cause urine to back up to the kidneys and lead to potentially serious health complications. Your doctor may choose to plan laparoscopic pyeloplasty after displaying scan and physical testJ. Before the procedure, the risks and benefits are discussed in detail to ensure that the patient is comfortable to go through it.

patients are usually instructed to avoid food consumption and liquids night before laparoscopic surgery of pyeloplasty. On the day of the procedure, a general anesthetic is given and the lower abdomen is shaved and sterilized. A small cut is made to provide access to the endoscope, a fiber camera that transmits feed in real time to the monitor in the operating room. The surgeon uses an endoscope to check the UPJ and guide the placement of surgical instruments. A stent is usually placed between the kidney and one of the abdominal cuts to release excess blood and urine during operation.

Once the stent and endoscope are in place, the surgeon carefully cuts off the OPJ obstruction and removes the damaged tissue by means of one of the cuts. The kidney base is re -attached to a healthy part of urea using a specialthe stitches of the stitches. Tools and endoscope are then inserted and surgical wounds are bandaged.

The patient is usually maintained in the hospital for at least one day after laparoscopic pyeloplasty. The stent and urinary catheter are maintained on the spot for two to five days to let the kidney release when the reconstructed UPJ begins to treat. If there is no internal bleeding or other complications, the patient can go home with special diet and activity instructions. Most people are able to fully recover in a few weeks.
