What is an ankle arthrodesis?

Ankle arthrodesis is a type of surgery where the joint between the bones of the tibia and the fibula and the bone of the ankle talus is connected. This type of ankle surgery is usually performed as a treatment of severe ankle pain, usually caused by arthritis. It is usually reserved for patients who have tried non -surgical remedies, such as specially modified shoes and medicines to kill pain but without success. The ankle fusion is generally used in younger, more active patients as alternatives to replace artificial ankle, because the fused joint is more resistant and worn. After the bone surfaces have been leveled to remove the damaged bones and cartilage, the metal screws are used to hold them together. Within the healing process, the development of the new bone combines the cut surfaces and the joint connects. The ankle joint then becomes stiff, but the flexibility of the foot and the knees helps to compensate it and the person is often able to walk normally, even if running may not be possible. It usually takes about three months after the arthrodesis surgerye before the merger is completed, so the joint will have to be rest and at that time the cast may be worn.

Keyhole surgery can be used to perform ankle arthrodesis, which has the advantage that recovery is faster and is less pain after surgery than traditional methods of open surgery. In the technique of surgery on a keyhole known as arthroscopy, small cuts are carried out in the skin of the ankle to insert a tool of observation together with miniature surgical instruments. Patients are usually able to attach weight per joint day after surgery, using support or crutches and azačečech physiotherapy. Open surgery can be used for more complicated cases, perhaps where the deformity needs to be corrected except the fusion of the joints and sometimes the outer metal frame is attached around the foot to place the bones in place, instead of placed in the joint.

One of the possible disadvantages of the ankle arthrodesis is thatthat other joints around the fucking ankle are placed on other joints, which can cause them to become arthritic over time. For a person with arthritis in two ankles, it could be very deactivating if both fused, because to get up from the chair is needed a certain degree of ankle flexibility. In this case, the joint replacement can be used in one ankle. In less active or elderly people who are unlikely to wear a prosthesis, ankle mobility may be more important than joint stability and prosthetic ankle replacement can be a better choice than ankle anthodesis.
