What is Daunorubicin?
Dunorubicin is a chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of neuroblastoma, acute myelogenic leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (all). This medicine is also known as daunomycin and is sold under the names of brands such as Cerubidine®. However, this is much less commonly used than once, because of many of its side effects. Possible side effects of daunorubicin include kidney and heart failure damage, except for the common side effects of chemotherapy such as the depression of the immune system. It is derived from bacteria and active against certain bacterial species. Although many new drugs are being developed in laboratories, bacterial species that produce this medicine were discovered in Italy Andria in the 1950s. It was found that soil samples taken due to a centuries -old castle contain a bacterial species called streptomyces peuucetius . Bacteria testing has confirmed that it is able to produce a strong anti -cancer medicine. In this process, the DNA strings are interrupted by inserting the molekul without bottom. This leads to malformation of DNA springs. This means that DNA can no longer be read for protein production and the cell can no longer replicate. This eventually leads to the death of the cell.
This chemotherapeutic agent can affect all types of cells, but, as in most other chemotherapeutic drugs, it is much more effective in rapidly dividing cells. This is because cells that are rapidly dividing occupy more drugs from their surroundings. Some other types of cells, including hair follicles and immune cells, are also rapidly divided in the body, leading to side effects such as hair loss and suppressing the immune system.
The most common side effects of daunoruubicin are nausea and vomiting, which can start several hours after treatment and may persist for one to two days. Hair loss usually begins several weeks after receiving the first dose of the drug. The suppression of the immune system begins within a week from the first careand may persist for two or more weeks. Other common side effects include a low number of red blood cells, mouth ulcers, pink or red urine, fatigue, weakness and sensitivity to the sun.
This medicine can also cause some rare but potentially dangerous effects. At high doses, daunorubicin can cause changes in the heart muscle structure. This can affect heart function and can lead to congestive heart failure. Therefore, people with any type of heart disease cannot use this medicine. As a result, some patients could undergo heart test tests before treatment to see if the drug was safe.
The severity of the possible side effects of daunorubicin means that it is not used in cases where another drug with fewer side effects is an alternative treatment option. This medicine is less useful than its developers could hope, but led to the development of several second generation drugs, including epirubicin, idarubicin and doxorubicin. These drugs mayT similar toxic effects, but extremely high doses are required for toxicity.
