What is the relationship between sertraline and ADHD?
sertraline is the general name of antidepressants selective class inhibitors reakna rease serotonin (SSRI), which is sometimes given patients suffering from attention disorder/hyperactivity (ADHD). Sryrtralin, also known by Zoloft®, has not been approved specifically for ADHD treatment and may have potentially serious side effects. Antidepressants, such as sertraline, are usually not used as ADHD treatment, but are often needed to treat concurrent depression or symptoms of anxiety that commonly occur in ADHD patients. Some research focused on sertraline and depression, but patients with ADHD were usually excluded from studies. An exception is a 1996 study that examined the effects of sertraline and fluoxetine on depression in patients who also had symptoms of ADHD. While everyone has experienced improving depressive symptoms, no unhealthy any improvement in ADHD symptoms.
The greatest concerns that doctors with sertraline and ADHD or depression are increased risk of aggression and suicidal behavior during sertraline treatmentIn children and adolescents. A typical adolescent has a 2 % risk of attempting suicide. Patients treated for depression with sertraline saw a jump of suicide behavior to 3.5 to 4 percent. Some adult patients also mentioned an increase in aggressive and violent behavior.
In 2003, the United Kingdom banned S serrtralin for children under the age of 18 because of the connection between sertraline and suicidal behavior. Because of this custody, many doctors warn against sertraline and ADHD, even if depression is present. In the US, the only drug approved for depression in children is fluoxetine, which is also sold under the brand ProCAC® and has no potential for aggression behavior or suicide.
Yet many doctors try to explain the connection between sertraline and aggressive behavior. Some assume that antidepressant has so much relieved depression so much that patients who have already considered suicide were then sufficientlyunder voltage to perform an action. Many others have had positive experience with sertraline and ADHD or depression without side effects.
Given the controversy, it may be best to avoid mixing sertral and ADHD in children. There are other antidepressants that are more suitable and other drugs for the treatment of ADHD symptoms. If a child takes sertraline, it is best to monitor any changes in behavior. These changes in behavior include aggression, violent explosions and increased angry episodes. Whenever the child suggests that he intends to hurt himself or others, he is a reason for concern and the problem to discuss with the doctor.
