What is Burbot?

Burbot is a long, slim freshwater fish that inhabits lakes and rivers in the colder climate of the northern hemisphere. Also known as aless catfish, Eelpout, Methy, lawyer, freshwater cod, loche, mud shark, ling or skin ling, the name Burbot comes from the Latin word Barba . Ugly fish similar to the catfish, it is a Scandinavian delicacy and known among fishermen for their mild meat and jathers rich in vitamins.

Mature Burbots usually reach a length of between 15 and 22 inches (about 38 to 55 cm) and weigh between 1 and 3 pounds (about 0.45 and 1.4 kg). They have a long, eel similar, cylindrical bodies that are spotted olive and brown over their backs with a lower abdomen. Long fins run down the center of the back and abdomen from the center of the fish to the rounded tail. The skin of the Burbot is smooth and the scales are small, almost indistinguishable to the naked eye.

for vicious predators, who are largely night, these slender fish prey for Whitefish, lamps and even other Burbots. WhoThey can get them, it was also known to eat mice. Their large mouths are well suitable for their carnivorous nature, with several rows of small, retrospective teeth and strong jaws. Within five or six years, juvenile Burbota also feeds on invertebrates and insects.

well -adapted to the cold water of the northern climate, Burbots rest in the middle of winter under the ice. Anywhere from a dozen to more than 100 buckets, they gather into a light ball that emerges, and one Burbot can produce more than a million eggs. These long -term, slow -growing fish can often live for more than 20 years and achieve their mature size aged between five and seven years. It is also about the time when weaving begins.

Burbot can be hunted during summer months even in winter, which makes them a popular goal for fishermen on the ice. They can be caught by a simple fishing pole and a hook, with frozen or fresh fish used as bait. Burbot, which is known for theft of bait, may be a challenge for disconnecting from the hook as soon as he is caught, because he can wrap his long body around the wrist someone trying to take it off the hook. In Minnesota there is a festival entitled Eelpout International Festival, which honors this fish coming from so many of many lakes of the state.
