What is a star apple?

Chrysophyllum cainito, or Star Apple, is known under several names, including Cainito, Golden Leaf Tree, Pomme du Lait and Milk Fruit. This tropical evergreen tree is considered to be a origin from Central America and Western India. It is a large tree and grows quite quickly. Star Apple Trees can grow in different types of land, but the right drainage is important. They also seem to grow the best in a warmer tropical climate. It is grown in parts of the southern United States, the Philippines, the Caribbean Islands and many parts of Central America. Trees can begin to bring fruit in just two to five years. The stellar apple tree leaves are solid and measure about two inches (five centimeters) wide and five to seven inches (about 12.7 to 17.8 centimeters). The upper part of the leaves is green and shiny while the bottom of the leaves is golden color and covered with silk finehairs. Small purple flowers are sweet and fragrant.

Star apple fruit is often elongated or pears in the shape and approximately the same size as an apple and skin is usually smooth and quite leather. Although the skin and bark of this fruit are not edible, pulp is soft and many are considered very tasty. There are two types of this tree and each species produces a different color of the fruit - dark purple or light green.

Purple Star apples have strong skin attached to the bark. Hruta of this fruit is usually a dark purple color and pulp extends from light purple to white. Green Star Apple has thinner skin and bark. Cortex and pulp this fruit is a milky white color.

Star Apple can be eaten right from the tree or can be used instead of different fruit. Before you eat a star apple or use one in a recipe, it must be peeled first. All outer skin and bark must be taken and discarded.
