What is an anise hyssop?
Anise Hyssop is an aromatic permanent herb that smells and tastes like anise, but is another plant. A member of the lamiaceae or Mint, the scientific name of Anise Hyssop is Agastache foeniculum and is commonly called Licorice Mint. Anise Hyssop reaches a height of 2 to 4 feet (0.6 to 1.2 meters) with a range of 1 feet (0.3 meters). Later in the summer it produces striking flower spikes of 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 centimeters) long, which have blue to purple coloring. It is easy to spread from seeds, cuttings and root division and used as a decoration, a culinary herb and natural medicine.
This herb has square stems and green, serrated leaves that have gray hair on the lower surface. It is used in full sun with well -drained soil, but can tolerate a partial shadow. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to the color of flowers, smell and nectar.
The herb is often used as a low hedge or boundary in the back of the garden. Its leaves can be used as an aroma and a natural sweetenerin teas. Flowers and leaves can be used dry or fresh.
